What should you know about vintage otoscope?

An otoscope uses a light and a viewing lens, with a small disposable or reusable speculum, to inspect the ear canal and eardrum. Age can affect brightness, lens clarity, battery performance and the fit of attachments. A view can be limited by earwax, swelling, narrow canals or movement, especially in a young child. The device does not replace clinical judgement or hearing assessment.

Do not put a vintage otoscope into your own ear or a child's ear without training. Damaged, unclean or poorly lit equipment can cause injury or give a misleading view. For ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing or suspected infection, arrange a GP consultation. A clinician can choose safe equipment, clean it correctly and decide whether further examination is needed.

Seek prompt medical care for severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, sudden hearing loss, a foreign object, significant dizziness or a child who appears very unwell. Avoid cotton buds and do not force an instrument into the canal while waiting.

Ask whether the ear canal and eardrum were visible, whether wax is affecting the view, whether hearing should be checked, and which symptoms require follow-up.
