What should you know about video otoscope veterinary use?

The device can magnify the ear canal and provide a shared screen view. This may help a clinician notice wax, irritation, swelling, foreign material or changes near the eardrum. A clear image supports examination, but it does not by itself explain every cause of pain or prove that treatment is needed.

Veterinary use may involve an animal that cannot remain still or has a tender ear, so the clinician chooses a safe approach. In people, a standard otoscope examination may be part of a GP consultation or child health consultation.

Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the ear before an examination. Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, reduced hearing, dizziness, recent swimming, injury and any attempted drops. Keep pets calm and follow the veterinary team’s instructions; sedation may be considered when movement or pain prevents a safe view.

Arrange prompt medical or veterinary assessment for severe pain, sudden hearing change, bleeding, a lodged object, marked swelling, fever, balance problems or discharge. Seek urgent help if symptoms follow a head injury or if a person or animal becomes unusually drowsy, distressed or difficult to rouse.

Ask: What did the camera view show? Was the eardrum visible? Could wax, infection, injury or a foreign object explain the symptoms? Is cleaning, a sample, medicine or follow-up needed? What should I watch for at home?
