Vicks VapoRub for toenail fungus: what to know

Toenail fungus can make a nail yellow or white, thick, brittle, ridged, crumbly, or detached from its bed. The visible nail is slow to change because treatment must address infection while healthy nail grows forward. Vicks VapoRub can leave the nail feeling coated or scented, but that does not confirm that fungus has been removed.

Trauma, shoe pressure, and nail psoriasis can mimic fungal infection. Discoloured nails therefore need an examination rather than an assumption. Athlete's foot may coexist and can help spread fungus between the skin and nails.
