The device directs light through a small viewing tip so a clinician can assess the ear canal for redness, swelling, wax, discharge or foreign material. The eardrum may be visible if the canal is clear and the patient can remain still. Magnification supports a closer view, but the instrument cannot determine the cause of every ear symptom on its own. Tell the clinician about pain, itching, discharge, hearing change, fever, recent water exposure and any previous ear problems. Do not clean deeply with cotton buds or place drops in the ear unless advised. The clinician may use a smaller tip for a child and pause if pressure causes pain.
