Vestibular vulvodynia: what to know

How the structures involved in Vulvodynia differ from normal

Short answer

Vestibular vulvodynia causes pain or burning around the vaginal entrance with touch or pressure, after other causes of vulval pain have been assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful principle
Reduce irritation and avoid pushing through pain

How it can feel

The vestibule is the sensitive area just inside the vaginal opening. Pain may feel burning, raw, stinging, or like a sharp irritation, and can be triggered by penetration, inserting a tampon, a pelvic examination, tight clothing, or prolonged sitting. Some people have pain only when touched; others have discomfort without contact. Redness or visible skin changes may be absent.

Vulvodynia is diagnosed from the symptom pattern and examination while considering infections, skin conditions, hormonal changes, nerve pain, and pelvic-floor muscle tension. A clinician may gently map tender areas and take swabs or other tests when indicated. The condition is real even when the skin looks normal.

Ways to reduce irritation

Wash gently with lukewarm water and avoid fragranced soaps, wipes, deodorants, and harsh detergents on the vulva. Choose breathable underwear and loose clothing, and use a lubricant if sexual activity is comfortable. Do not push through pain. Treatment may combine tailored pain strategies, pelvic-floor physiotherapy, psychological support, and specialist care; vaginal dilator therapy may be considered gradually for selected people.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for ongoing vulval pain, pain during sex, or difficulty with tampons or examinations. Seek prompt care for new sores, blisters, ulcers, unusual discharge, fever, bleeding, rapidly changing skin, or severe pain, because these features may point to another condition requiring treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes have been checked, whether pelvic-floor muscle tension is contributing, and which treatments suit your symptoms and goals. Ask how to begin physiotherapy or dilator work safely and what level of discomfort means you should stop.

Questions people ask

Can vestibular vulvodynia occur when the skin looks normal?

Yes. Pain can be present without obvious skin changes, which is why the symptom pattern and careful examination matter.

Is vestibular vulvodynia treatable?

Symptoms can often be managed with an individual plan that may combine pelvic-floor care, pain strategies, education, and other support.
