What should you know about very painful sore throat?

Strep Throat commonly presents with a sudden sore throat and painful swallowing, while a cough or runny nose can point towards a viral illness. Tonsillitis may cause swollen, red tonsils, sometimes with patches. Glandular Fever can bring marked tiredness and swollen glands. These patterns overlap, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may examine your throat and neck and decide whether testing is useful.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and rest your voice. Gargling with warm salt water may soothe an adult throat; do not give salt-water gargles to a child who may swallow them. Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help some people when used according to the label and personal medical advice. Avoid smoking and other throat irritants. Do not start leftover antibiotics, because they do not treat viral causes.

Seek emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, develop rapidly increasing swelling, or sound unusually muffled. Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe one-sided pain, difficulty opening the mouth, dehydration, a persistent high fever, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Children, older adults, and people with reduced immunity may need earlier advice.
