Very light spotting after sex: what to know

Friction, dryness, or a small surface irritation can cause a trace of blood after intercourse. The cervix may also bleed more readily during pregnancy or with hormonal changes. Infection, including Chlamydia, can cause bleeding with discharge, burning, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex. Cervical polyps and changes on the cervix are other possibilities. A cervical or womb cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but spotting does not show that cancer is the cause.

The pattern matters: record when it happens, how long it lasts, whether it follows penetration, and whether you have pain, discharge, or bleeding at other times. A clinician may offer an examination, infection tests, and cervical screening or referral when appropriate.

Pause intercourse while bleeding or soreness continues. When you resume, take time for arousal and consider a water-based lubricant if dryness may be contributing. Avoid putting products inside the vagina. Arrange a routine appointment if the spotting recurs, happens without sex, or comes with discharge or pelvic pain. A partner may also need testing if an infection is found.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, fever, or feeling very unwell. Seek prompt advice as well if you may be pregnant and have bleeding with pain or dizziness. Do not wait for repeated episodes when symptoms are rapidly worsening.

Ask whether you need infection testing, a cervical examination, or an update on cervical screening. Tell the clinician about contraception, pregnancy possibility, medicines, dryness, and any new partner so the assessment is focused.
