What should you know about very itchy eyes?

Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching, watering, redness, and puffy eyelids, usually affecting both eyes. Allergic rhinitis can add sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and throat irritation. House dust mites, pets, pollen, and other airborne triggers may set off symptoms.

Itching can also follow contact with smoke, cosmetics, contact-lens products, or dry air. Thick discharge, significant pain, strong light sensitivity, or one-sided symptoms may need a different assessment. Itchy eyes alone cannot identify the cause.

Do not rub your eyes, because rubbing can worsen surface irritation and swelling. Wash your hands, use a cool clean compress, and pause eye makeup or contact lenses until the eyes feel settled. Avoid the suspected trigger where practical and keep windows or bedding clean if dust is a pattern.

A pharmacist or clinician can help choose allergy medication or suitable eye drops, especially for children, pregnancy, contact-lens use, or other eye conditions. Do not share eye drops, and do not use someone else's prescription.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision change, severe pain, injury or chemical exposure, intense light sensitivity, a swollen eye with fever, or difficulty opening the eye. Get emergency help for facial or tongue swelling, wheezing, or breathing difficulty after a possible allergen.

Arrange prompt review for pus-like discharge, marked one-sided redness, contact-lens-related pain, or symptoms that keep returning despite avoiding triggers.
