Very Dry Skin: What to Know

Loss of moisture from the outer skin layer can cause tightness, rough texture, scaling, itch, and fine cracks. Hot showers, strong soaps, cold or dry air, and repeated washing can aggravate it. Red, itchy patches may occur with atopic dermatitis or asteatotic eczema. Well-defined thickened areas can occur with psoriasis, so appearance and distribution matter.

Keep showers short and lukewarm, then pat rather than rub. Apply a thick, fragrance-free emollient therapy product while the skin is still slightly damp; ointments or creams generally hold moisture better than light lotions. Use gentle cleansers only where needed, avoid scrubs and fragranced products, and cover cracks with a clean dressing if clothing rubs them. A clinician can add treatment when eczema or psoriasis is suspected.

Arrange medical advice if dryness is widespread, repeatedly cracks, disrupts sleep, or does not improve with a careful routine. Seek prompt care for warmth, increasing pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever, which can signal infection. New severe dryness with other body symptoms also deserves assessment.
