Very dark brown stool, almost black, during COVID

A viral illness can bring appetite changes, diarrhoea, nausea, or altered eating, which may affect stool appearance. It does not make every black bowel movement a COVID symptom. Black, sticky, tar-like stool can reflect digested blood from the upper digestive tract. Gastritis or a peptic ulcer may cause that bleeding, while Helicobacter Pylori Infection is one possible cause of stomach irritation and ulcer disease. Iron, bismuth, and dark foods remain alternative explanations. The texture and accompanying symptoms matter more than a colour label alone.

Keep track of stool colour and texture, fluid intake, fever, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. Review medicines started during the illness, including iron, bismuth, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If the stool is black and tarry, recurs, or has no clear food or medicine explanation, contact a clinician promptly and mention your current viral symptoms and all medicines.

Seek emergency help for black stool with fainting, severe weakness, confusion, breathlessness, cold clammy skin, intense abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or coffee-ground vomit. These are not signs to attribute to COVID without assessment. Get same-day advice for repeated black stool or if you take blood-thinning medicine, even when respiratory symptoms are mild.

Ask whether the colour could be medication-related, whether digestive bleeding needs checking, and whether gastritis, peptic ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection is relevant. Tell the clinician when COVID symptoms began, when the stool changed, and whether you have dizziness, pain, diarrhoea, or vomiting.
