What it may mean

A sore throat may accompany a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19, often with cough, fever, tiredness or body aches. Tonsillitis can cause enlarged painful tonsils, while Strep Throat may cause marked throat pain and fever without the usual cough. Glandular Fever can bring prolonged tiredness and swollen neck glands. Allergic Rhinitis or Acid Reflux may irritate the throat without a typical infection.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, rest your voice and avoid smoke. Gargling with warm salty water may soothe the throat if you can gargle safely. Stay home from close contact while feverish or acutely unwell, and arrange assessment if the pain is severe or not settling.

When to seek care

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided swelling, inability to open the mouth, confusion or blue lips. Get prompt medical advice for dehydration, a persistent high fever, rash, neck swelling, worsening one-sided pain or symptoms after exposure to someone with Strep Throat. Do not try to scrape the tonsils or share leftover antibiotics.
