How is vertigo treated in dogs?

A dog may tilt its head, stumble, circle, fall, move its eyes unusually, drool, vomit, or struggle to stand. Inner-ear disease, inflammation, medication effects, and problems affecting the brain can look similar. The signs do not show the cause by themselves. A veterinarian may check the ears, nerves, hydration, walking, eye movements, and medicines, then decide whether further testing is needed.

Keep your dog on a non-slip surface away from stairs, balconies, pools, and furniture edges. Carry or support the dog when necessary, offer small amounts of water if swallowing is normal, and keep food within easy reach. Do not give human dizziness or nausea medicine unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes it. Note when the signs began, whether there was an ear problem, toxin exposure, fall, or new medicine, and bring that information to the appointment.

Contact an emergency veterinarian for collapse, seizures, severe breathing trouble, repeated vomiting, inability to swallow, sudden blindness, severe weakness, suspected poisoning, or a recent head injury. Arrange prompt veterinary care for a new head tilt, circling, or unsteady walking, even if the dog remains alert. Do not assume the signs are harmless because they resemble a human balance problem.
