What should you know about a swollen vein in the palm?

The palm contains superficial veins that may stand out after exercise, in warm conditions, or when the hand hangs down. A tight grip, recent work with the hands or mild dehydration can also make veins easier to see. Swelling in the surrounding tissues may change their appearance without a primary vein problem.

A fall or impact can cause swelling and bruising, including an injury associated with a distal radius fracture at the wrist. Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis may produce swelling, stiffness and tenderness across several joints or along both hands.

Remove rings and bracelets, rest the hand and raise it above heart level when practical. Gently open and close the fingers if movement is comfortable. Record whether the change follows activity, heat, an injury or a new medicine, and compare it with the other hand.

For a recent minor knock, protect the hand and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Avoid pressing, needling or vigorously massaging a painful or firm vein. Book an examination if the appearance does not settle or hand use becomes difficult.

Seek urgent care if the palm or fingers turn blue, pale or cold, swelling develops quickly, pain is intense, sensation or strength changes, or the fingers cannot move normally. A deformed wrist or hand after an injury also needs urgent assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, a firm tender vein, or swelling that travels toward the wrist or arm. These findings may need examination for infection, inflammation or a circulation issue.
