What should you know about a swollen vein in the hand?

Superficial veins can become more visible when the hand is below the heart, after exertion or in warm conditions. Tight clothing, dehydration and natural changes in skin and tissue can also make a vein appear prominent. Swelling around the hand may make nearby veins look raised without the vein itself being the main problem.

Injury can cause swelling, bruising and tenderness; a distal radius fracture is one possibility after a fall onto the hand or wrist. Joint inflammation, including rheumatoid arthritis, may cause broader swelling and stiffness rather than an isolated vein change.

Compare both hands in similar lighting and note when the change began. Remove rings and tight bands, rest the hand, keep it gently elevated and move the fingers within comfort. If there was a recent injury, avoid forceful gripping and use a wrapped cold pack briefly; do not place ice directly on skin.

Do not massage a painful, red or firm area, and do not puncture it. Arrange an examination if swelling persists, returns without a clear trigger, or comes with reduced movement, numbness or tenderness.

Seek urgent care if the hand becomes blue, pale or unusually cold, swelling increases quickly, pain is severe, fingers feel numb or weak, or you cannot move them normally. Urgent assessment is also needed after significant trauma or an obvious deformity.

Get prompt medical advice for a red, hot, tender vein, pus, fever, or swelling that spreads up the arm. These features can indicate infection, inflammation or a circulation problem.

Tell the clinician when the vein changed, whether there was injury or a needle procedure, and whether pain, warmth, redness, numbness or swelling affects the fingers. Ask whether imaging or circulation testing is needed.
