VBAC calculator after two C-sections: what it can and cannot tell you

Calculators generally use selected information such as age, previous vaginal birth, reason for earlier caesareans and the current pregnancy. They may not capture the full operative reports, the exact uterine incision, placenta location, fetal position or changes during labour. An estimate describes one part of decision-making; it does not predict your individual experience or remove the need for a clinician’s assessment.

If you use a calculator, take the result to your obstetric team rather than treating it as a recommendation. Request review of both caesarean records if possible, and ask whether your maternity unit can provide continuous monitoring and urgent surgery. Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of planned VBAC and planned Caesarean Section, including how induction or spontaneous labour would affect the plan.

Call your maternity unit when labour symptoms begin, your waters break, bleeding occurs or fetal movements reduce. During labour, sudden severe abdominal pain, collapse, heavy bleeding or an abrupt change in contractions requires immediate assessment. Do not use a calculator result to delay contacting the team.

Ask what information the calculator leaves out, how your two uterine scars were made, whether vaginal birth is clinically appropriate, and what monitoring and emergency arrangements are available. Ask how your preferences will be supported if the plan changes.
