Vasovagal syncope in pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Vasovagal syncope in pregnancy can cause a brief drop in blood pressure and heart rate, often after standing, heat, pain, or prolonged sitting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common warning signs
- Warmth, nausea, sweating, visual dimming, and weakness
- First response
- Sit or lie on your side straight away
- Review
- Arrange assessment after a first or repeated episode
What it can feel like
Pregnancy changes circulation and can make light-headedness more noticeable. Warning sensations may include warmth, nausea, sweating, blurred or narrowing vision, ringing in the ears, weakness, or a sudden need to sit down. Some people faint briefly; others recover while still conscious. Lying on your side after symptoms start can support blood flow and helps reduce injury from a fall.
A clinician may consider other contributors, such as dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, or an abnormal heart rhythm. The episode pattern, pregnancy stage, medicines, fluid intake, and any injury all help guide assessment.
What to do when symptoms start
Stop walking and sit or lie down immediately. If possible, lie on your side, loosen tight clothing, and ask someone to stay with you. Once fully alert, take small drinks if you can swallow safely and eat your usual snack or meal if you have missed food. Stand up gradually only after the warning has settled.
Reduce familiar triggers by avoiding long periods standing, overheated rooms, and sudden posture changes. Keep a record of what happened, how long recovery took, and whether you had palpitations, bleeding, pain, or an injury. Do not drive until a clinician has discussed recurrent fainting with you.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for fainting with chest pain, trouble breathing, severe headache, one-sided weakness, confusion, a sustained pounding or irregular heartbeat, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or a significant fall. During pregnancy, urgent assessment is also appropriate if you faint during exertion, faint without warning, or do not quickly return to your usual state.
Arrange prompt medical review after any first episode, repeated near-fainting, or episode with injury. Bring your symptom record and medication list. A clinician may check blood pressure, heart rhythm, blood tests, and pregnancy-related concerns.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit a vasovagal pattern, whether you need checks for anaemia, dehydration, hypoglycaemia, or an irregular rhythm, and which fluids, meals, activity changes, and side-lying position are suitable for your pregnancy.

What position is safest after a near-faint?
Lie on your side and remain there until you feel fully recovered; ask someone to stay nearby if you feel weak.
