Vasovagal syncope with food poisoning

Food poisoning can irritate the gut and lead to nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever. Pain, retching, or using the toilet can activate a vagal response, while fluid loss reduces the circulation available to the brain. Together, these changes may cause sweating, weakness, tunnel vision, or a brief faint. Food poisoning is a possible setting for vasovagal syncope, but a faint can have other causes and should not be dismissed if it is new or severe.

If warning symptoms appear, sit or lie down immediately and protect yourself from a fall. Once awake and able to swallow, take frequent small sips of an oral rehydration drink; avoid gulping if that worsens vomiting. Rest, wash hands carefully, and follow local medical advice about food and medicines. A clinician may recommend oral rehydration therapy, while IV fluid therapy may be considered when vomiting or fluid loss prevents drinking. Do not drive while dizzy.

Seek urgent care for fainting with blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, chest pain, marked drowsiness, confusion, an injury, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed for signs of significant dehydration, persistent vomiting, worsening fever, or very little urine. Emergency help is needed if the person is unresponsive or breathing abnormally.
