Vasovagal syncope diagnosis

Your clinician will ask what you were doing, whether you were standing or sitting, what you felt before the event, how long you were unresponsive, and how quickly you recovered. A clear trigger such as pain, heat, fear, or a needle plus nausea, sweating, or visual dimming supports a vasovagal pattern.

The assessment may include heart rate and blood pressure measurements, an examination, and an electrocardiogram. Blood tests can be considered when blood loss, anaemia, dehydration, or hypoglycaemia is possible. A heart rhythm concern such as atrial fibrillation may require additional monitoring.

Write down the sequence in your own words and ask a witness what they observed. Include injuries, unusual movements, tongue biting, loss of bladder control, palpitations, recent illness, fluid intake, meals, and medicines. Do not drive until a clinician has advised you if the episode was unexplained or occurred without warning.

Bring relevant medical records and mention previous fainting, heart disease, family history of sudden death, and pregnancy possibility. These details help determine whether simple advice is enough or further testing is needed.

Seek emergency help for fainting with chest pain, severe breathlessness, a sustained irregular heartbeat, serious injury, seizure-like activity, persistent confusion, or difficulty waking. Prompt review is also needed when fainting occurs during exercise, while lying down, without a warning, or in repeated episodes.

Ask what findings make vasovagal syncope likely, which alternative causes have been considered, and whether you need blood tests, an electrocardiogram, or rhythm monitoring. Clarify when you can safely drive, exercise, work at height, or attend another procedure.
