Vaginal odour before your period: what to know

Vaginal odour before a period may change with normal discharge and menstrual blood, but a strong or persistent smell with symptoms needs assessment. Hormonal shifts can alter discharge, while a small amount of older blood may have a metallic or earthy smell. Odour alone cannot diagnose an infection.

Track whether the change appears only shortly before bleeding and fades afterwards. A fishy or foul odour, grey, yellow or green discharge, itching, burning, pelvic pain or pain during urination can signal infection. Odour after sex may reflect semen, sweat or a change in vaginal acidity, but repeated episodes still deserve review. A forgotten tampon can cause a sudden, strong smell and needs removal by a clinician if it cannot be removed easily.

Wash the vulva gently with water or a mild unperfumed cleanser and change pads or tampons regularly during bleeding. Avoid douching, scented products, deodorant sprays and inserting home remedies. Keep a note of cycle timing, discharge, pain and any new products or sexual contacts. If the smell persists beyond the period, recurs across cycles or concerns you, arrange a clinician visit for an examination and possible swab.

Seek prompt care for fever, worsening lower abdominal pain, vomiting, feeling faint, unusual bleeding, painful urination or a strong odour with abnormal discharge. Arrange an appointment for symptoms after a new sexual contact, repeated episodes, pregnancy, or a smell that does not settle after bleeding ends. Urgent review is based on these warning symptoms, not on the odour alone.

Ask whether the timing fits a normal cycle change, whether you need swabs or urine testing, and whether a retained tampon or infection should be excluded. Ask which hygiene products are least irritating and what changes should prompt a quicker review.
