Short answer

Vaginal ingrown hair removal should be gentle: stop shaving, use warm compresses, and never dig into or squeeze the skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an ingrown hair means

An ingrown hair develops when a cut or newly growing hair curves back into nearby skin. On the hair-bearing outer vulva, it can cause a tender bump, redness, itching, or a small spot of pus. The vaginal canal itself does not grow hair, so a bump inside it needs a different assessment. Shaving, waxing, friction, and tightly fitted clothing can irritate follicles. Recurrent inflamed bumps may also resemble Folliculitis or Razor Bumps, while Keratosis Pilaris is a different follicle-related condition.

Safer removal and prevention

Pause shaving and waxing until the area settles. Hold a clean warm, damp cloth against the outer skin for several minutes, then wash gently and pat dry. If the hair tip becomes clearly visible at the surface, a clinician can advise whether it should be lifted; do not pierce the skin or pull at a buried hair. Wear breathable underwear, reduce rubbing, and avoid fragranced products on the vulva. Once healed, use a clean razor, shaving gel, and light strokes in the direction of growth. Repeated problems may justify a discussion of Laser Hair Removal.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if the lump is enlarging, very painful, hot, draining, or not improving after home care. Seek prompt help for spreading redness, fever, feeling unwell, or several painful lesions. A clinician can distinguish an ingrown hair from an abscess, cyst, infection, or another vulval lesion and can remove a trapped hair using clean technique.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be an ingrown hair or folliculitis? Should I change my shaving or waxing method? Is there a safe product for this exact area? Would hair-reduction treatment help if these bumps keep returning?

Questions people ask

Can I remove a vaginal ingrown hair with tweezers?

Do not dig into the skin. If the hair is not plainly visible, a clinician should decide whether lifting or removal is appropriate.

Can an ingrown hair become infected?

Yes. Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever warrants medical assessment.
