Vaginal delivery when you prefer a female clinician

Choosing vaginal birth does not determine the gender of every professional involved. Midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, nurses, and trainees may be part of the team. A female clinician may lead care when the service can arrange it, but labour can change quickly and another qualified clinician may need to act. Your preference is a valid part of shared planning; it does not mean you must refuse urgent treatment or feel unable to ask questions.

Tell your maternity service early that you prefer female clinicians and ask how requests are recorded. Ask who is usually present during examinations, induction, birth, and emergencies. Put your preference in your birth plan, identify a support person who can repeat it, and ask whether a female midwife or obstetrician can be contacted when labour begins. Discuss privacy, consent, an interpreter if needed, and how staff will explain examinations before they happen.

During labour, call the maternity unit for concerning pain, bleeding, fluid loss, fever, reduced fetal movement, or contractions that are becoming regular. In an emergency, accept the available qualified team so assessment and treatment are not delayed. You can still ask staff to explain what they are doing and to preserve your privacy as far as circumstances permit.
