Using flow cytometry: what to know

Short answer

Using flow cytometry helps a laboratory examine individual cells and identify patterns that support diagnosis, classification, and treatment planning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
Blood, bone marrow, or another suitable fluid
Purpose
Cell identification and classification

What the test means

A sample of blood, bone marrow, or another body fluid is prepared in the laboratory. Special markers attach to features on or inside cells. The instrument then passes cells through a beam of light and records their physical and marker patterns. A specialist reviews the combined pattern rather than relying on one finding alone.

This can show which cell types are present and whether a group of cells has an unusual pattern. The result may help distinguish reactive changes from a blood cancer, classify a known condition, or look for very small numbers of abnormal cells. Flow cytometry is an analysis method, not a treatment, and it is interpreted with symptoms, examination findings, and other laboratory or biopsy results.

How to prepare and follow up

Ask which sample is needed and whether any preparation is required. Blood sampling usually involves a routine draw; a bone marrow sample is collected through a separate procedure. Tell the team about medicines, recent infections, and prior cancer treatment because these details can affect interpretation.

Results may take time because several markers and cell populations are assessed. Request an explanation of what was found, what remains uncertain, and whether another test is needed. Keep the report with your other records and ask how it changes the next appointment or treatment discussion.

When to seek care

Contact your care team promptly if you develop fever, worsening weakness, unusual bleeding, or shortness of breath while an abnormal blood or marrow result is being investigated. After a marrow procedure, seek urgent advice for bleeding that does not settle with pressure, increasing redness or drainage, or severe pain at the sampling site.

Questions for your doctor

Which cells were examined, and what pattern was detected? How does this result fit with my blood count or biopsy? Could medicines or an infection affect the findings? When will the full interpretation be ready, and what happens next?

Questions people ask

Is flow cytometry the same as a biopsy?

No. Flow cytometry analyzes cells from a sample; a biopsy collects tissue or marrow for broader examination.

Does an abnormal pattern prove cancer?

No. The result needs interpretation alongside clinical findings and other tests.
