Use of magnesium sulphate in eclampsia

Eclampsia is a seizure related to a pregnancy blood-pressure disorder. Magnesium sulphate calms excessive nerve activity; it is not the same as a dietary supplement and is administered by trained clinicians, usually through a vein or muscle.

The team checks breathing, reflexes, urine output and blood pressure while the medicine is being given. These observations help clinicians identify excessive drug effect and decide when further doses are appropriate. Other care may include protecting the airway, controlling blood pressure and planning delivery when it is safest.

If a pregnant or recently pregnant person has a seizure, call emergency services, clear nearby objects and keep people from restraining them. Do not put food, drink or objects in the mouth. Once the seizure ends, place them on their side if it can be done safely and stay with them.

Tell clinicians about medicines, allergies, kidney problems and any previous pregnancy blood-pressure concerns. Do not delay emergency assessment while looking for magnesium at home. A seizure in pregnancy or after birth needs emergency care, even if it stops quickly. Seek urgent help for severe headache, vision changes, severe upper-abdominal pain, sudden swelling, breathlessness or confusion, because these can accompany a serious blood-pressure complication.
