What should you know about a USB otoscope?

Short answer

A USB otoscope is a camera-equipped ear viewer that can provide magnified images, but a clinician should interpret concerns about the ear.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main use
Magnified view of the outer ear canal
Key limitation
Images do not replace an ear examination
Avoid
Forcing the tip or probing a painful ear

What a USB otoscope shows

The device usually connects to a phone, tablet, or computer and sends a live image to an app or screen. It may help you see the entrance to the ear canal, wax, redness, fluid, or an object near the opening. A narrow canal, movement, hair, wax, or glare can make an image difficult to read. The eardrum may not be visible at all. A picture cannot reliably show how severe pain is, whether hearing has changed, or whether an infection needs treatment.

Do not treat a coloured area or a shadow as a diagnosis. Ear symptoms can have several causes, and inserting a camera can push wax deeper or scratch delicate skin.

Using one carefully

Use the device only at the outer ear unless a trained clinician has shown you a suitable technique. Never force the tip, use it during significant pain, or place it in a child’s ear without professional guidance. Keep the tip clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions and do not share it without proper cleaning. Save an image only if it helps you describe a change to a clinician; avoid relying on it to decide about drops or antibiotics.

For a proper examination, arrange an [Otoscope](/technology/otoscope/) assessment. A child with ear pain, discharge, fever, or reduced hearing may need a [Child Health Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/child-health-consultation/). Adults can discuss persistent or unclear symptoms during a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/).

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical assessment for severe or worsening ear pain, blood or pus-like discharge, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, swelling behind the ear, or a suspected object in the canal. Seek urgent help if the person is very unwell, unusually drowsy, or has trouble walking or breathing. Do not delay care while trying to obtain a clearer image.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the ear canal and eardrum were fully visible, what could explain the symptoms, whether wax removal is appropriate, and which warning signs should prompt reassessment. If you have an image, ask whether it adds useful information rather than interpreting it yourself.

Questions people ask

Can a USB otoscope diagnose an ear infection?

It may show changes that deserve attention, but diagnosis requires symptoms and a clinical examination.

Can I use one in a child’s ear?

Only with suitable professional guidance, because a child may move suddenly and the canal is delicate.
