What should you know about urticaria after covid?

Urticaria produces raised, itchy welts that can appear in one area, move around or fade while new ones form elsewhere. Individual welts often change over a short period, whereas bruising, scaling or a blistering rash deserves a different assessment. Fever, illness-related inflammation and medicines taken during COVID can each be relevant.

Hives are a condition, not proof that COVID is the only cause. A clinician may ask when the rash began, how long each welt lasts, what medicines were used, and whether there is facial or mouth swelling. Angioedema describes deeper swelling that can accompany hives.

Keep the skin cool, avoid hot showers and tight clothing, and use gentle, fragrance-free products. Take photographs when the rash is visible and record possible triggers, including new medicines, foods, heat, pressure or exercise.

A clinician or pharmacist may recommend an oral antihistamine when suitable for you. Follow the label or prescription, and check before combining products or taking a sedating medicine with alcohol or driving. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without medical advice; report a suspected reaction promptly.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness or sudden difficulty swallowing. These symptoms may indicate a severe allergic reaction, whether or not COVID was involved.

Arrange medical review for hives that keep returning, last beyond the acute illness, interfere with sleep, or occur with fever, painful skin, bruising or swelling. A clinician can decide whether another treatment or further evaluation is appropriate.

Ask whether the timing fits a post-viral reaction, a medicine reaction or another trigger; which antihistamine is suitable; how long to monitor the rash; and what swelling or breathing symptoms require emergency help. Mention pregnancy, asthma, allergies and all recent medicines.
