What should you know about urinary urgency and urge incontinence?

Short answer
Urinary urgency is a compelling need to urinate, while urge incontinence is urine leakage that follows an urge that is hard to postpone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
A person with overactive bladder may experience urgency with or without leakage, frequent visits, or night-time urination. The symptom can be influenced by infection, constipation, concentrated urine, caffeine, alcohol, anxiety, pelvic-floor function, or bladder sensitivity. A symptom does not by itself identify the cause, so a clinical review can separate bladder irritation from a longer-term pattern.
What you can do
Try not to rush or repeatedly visit the toilet “just in case.” Pause, breathe slowly, relax your shoulders, and use a few gentle pelvic-floor contractions while walking calmly to the bathroom. Bladder training can help retrain the urge response. Keep fluids steady rather than severely restricting them, and seek advice about constipation or medicines.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for persistent urgency, bothersome leakage, recurrent night waking, or symptoms that interfere with work, sleep, or travel. Seek prompt care for fever, pain, blood, vomiting, inability to urinate, or sudden neurological symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what tests are needed, whether a urine check is appropriate, and how to distinguish urge leakage from stress leakage. Ask how long to try bladder training before reviewing progress and whether urodynamic testing is relevant.

Questions people ask
Can this be treated?
Yes. Treatment is tailored to the pattern and may include bladder training, pelvic-floor support, medicines, or further assessment.
Should I keep a bladder diary?
A short record of drinks, toilet visits, urgency, leakage, and triggers can help a clinician identify patterns.
