Uric Acid and Rheumatoid Arthritis: What to Know

Rheumatoid arthritis is an immune-mediated condition that can cause ongoing inflammation in several joints, often with swelling, pain, and stiffness. A high uric acid result can support concern about gout, but it does not by itself show that rheumatoid arthritis is present. Uric acid can be within a usual range during a gout flare, and some people have a high result without gout. The pattern of symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and tests are considered together.

Rheumatoid arthritis may affect both sides of the body and can cause morning joint stiffness, finger stiffness, hand swelling, or broader joint symptoms. These symptoms can also have other causes, so they do not identify one diagnosis on their own.

Arrange a medical review if joint swelling, pain, or stiffness persists, returns, or affects daily tasks. Take a list of symptoms, their timing, which joints are involved, and any recent uric acid results. A clinician may consider blood tests, imaging, and an examination to distinguish rheumatoid arthritis from gout and other causes. Treatment may include prescribed anti-inflammatory medication or disease-directed therapy, depending on the diagnosis and your health history. Do not start or stop medication based only on a uric acid number.

Seek urgent medical advice for a suddenly very painful, hot, or swollen joint, especially with fever or feeling acutely unwell. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when swelling rapidly worsens, movement becomes markedly limited, or new weakness or numbness appears. A hot swollen joint can require urgent treatment because infection and crystal inflammation can look similar at first.
