What should you know about upright stereotactic breast biopsy?

Short answer

An upright stereotactic breast biopsy uses mammography guidance to remove small breast tissue samples for laboratory examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the procedure involves

You remain awake while the breast is positioned and compressed so the imaging system can locate an area such as calcifications that may not be felt. After local anaesthetic numbs the skin, the clinician makes a small opening and guides a needle to collect samples from different angles. A dressing is placed afterwards. Pressure, pulling, or bruising can occur, but sharp pain should be reported during the procedure. The tissue result helps distinguish benign changes from conditions needing further care; the biopsy itself does not diagnose cancer until the laboratory has examined the sample.

How to prepare and recover

Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit and tell the imaging team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, pregnancy possibility, or difficulty remaining still. Follow the centre’s instructions about medicines. Keep the dressing clean and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if advised. Avoid strenuous upper-body activity until you have been told the site is settled. Breast ultrasound may be used when a finding is better seen with sound-wave imaging, while a biopsy is the tissue-sampling step.

When to seek care

Contact the care team if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, swelling rapidly increases, the wound becomes increasingly red or hot, or you develop fever or worsening pain. Emergency help is appropriate for fainting, breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding. A new breast concern still needs follow-up even if the biopsy site heals normally.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why this biopsy method is recommended, when and how results will be shared, which medicines to pause, and what activity limits apply. Ask what the next step would be for a benign, uncertain, or abnormal result.

Questions people ask

Will I be awake?

Yes. The procedure is generally performed while you are awake, with local anaesthetic used to numb the sampling area.

Is a biopsy result the same as a cancer diagnosis?

No. The laboratory examines the tissue and reports what the cells show; your clinician explains what that finding means.
