Upper Lip Itchy and Swollen: When to Get Help

Swelling that starts suddenly after food, medicine, an insect sting, or a skin product may be part of an allergic reaction. Angioedema is deeper swelling that often affects the lips and can occur with or without hives. Local irritation, a cold sore, dental problem, or skin infection may produce more focused discomfort. The timing, speed of change, associated rash, and symptoms elsewhere help a clinician distinguish these possibilities.

Stop any newly used lip, dental, or facial product and avoid the suspected trigger. Keep the area clean, do not scratch or squeeze it, and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for brief periods. If a clinician has previously given you an allergy action plan, follow it. Take a photograph and record recent foods, medicines, stings, and products to help explain the episode.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, voice change, dizziness, faintness, or rapidly worsening swelling. Seek prompt medical care for fever, severe pain, spreading redness, pus, or swelling that continues or keeps returning. Do not wait for a skin-only reaction to develop breathing symptoms.

Ask whether the episode fits Angioedema or another cause, what triggers to avoid, and whether you need an emergency action plan. Share the onset time, exposures, medicines, rash pattern, and any breathing or stomach symptoms.
