Oral rehydration salt contains glucose and electrolytes in a balanced mixture. The intestine absorbs these together with water, helping replace losses more effectively than plain water alone during diarrhoea. It does not remove the cause of an infection and does not replace medical assessment when dehydration is severe. The product may be useful for adults and children, but the correct preparation and amount depend on the product instructions, age, and clinical situation.

Dissolve the sachet only in the volume of safe water stated on the package. Do not make it stronger or weaker, and do not add extra sugar or salt. Give small, frequent sips; if vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart slowly. Continue suitable feeding or breastfeeding unless a clinician advises otherwise. Prepare fresh solution as instructed, keep it covered, and discard leftover solution according to the label. People with kidney disease, heart failure, or a prescribed fluid restriction should ask a clinician before using it.

Seek medical help for very little urine, marked sleepiness, confusion, inability to drink, persistent vomiting, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, or diarrhoea that is not settling. Babies, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions can become dehydrated quickly. Urgent assessment is needed if the person cannot keep fluids down or becomes difficult to wake.
