What should you know about unilateral lip swelling?

A local reaction may follow a bite, lip product, dental procedure, trauma, or repeated biting. A tender, warm area with redness, a blister, pus, or fever can point toward infection and needs medical assessment. Sudden swelling after food, medicine, a sting, or contact with a new product can be an allergic reaction. Swelling confined to one area may also reflect a blocked gland or irritation inside the mouth. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so note its timing and any trigger.

Stop using a new lip or oral product and rinse gently with water. Apply a cool, wrapped compress for short periods and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or applying harsh home remedies. Drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. If swelling follows dental work, contact the dental team for advice. Arrange a prompt review if it persists, becomes more painful, recurs, or is accompanied by a sore, fever, or drainage.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling of the lip is accompanied by tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek same-day care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, or an inability to open the mouth normally. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or breathing is becoming difficult.
