Understanding ADHD in adults

Short answer
Adult ADHD can affect attention, organisation, impulses and activity levels, and assessment can identify useful support.

What adult ADHD can look like
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. In adulthood, it may show as difficulty concentrating, losing track of tasks, forgetting appointments, interrupting, acting quickly or struggling to manage time. Some people feel restless; others mainly experience inattentiveness. Symptoms can affect work, study, relationships or household routines, but they do not define intelligence, motivation or character.
A clinician considers whether the pattern began earlier in life, appears in more than one setting and causes meaningful difficulty. Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, medication effects and other health conditions can overlap with ADHD, so a careful assessment matters.
Useful next steps
Write down examples from work, home and relationships, including missed deadlines, distractibility or impulsive decisions. Ask a GP about a Mental Health Assessment if these difficulties persist or interfere with daily life. Bring school reports or a relative’s observations if available; they can help describe longstanding patterns.
Practical support may include written reminders, one task at a time, quiet work periods, calendars, planned breaks and agreed communication routines. Treatment is individual: a clinician may discuss behavioural strategies, coaching, therapy or medication after reviewing your health and goals.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical review when attention or impulsivity is disrupting work, driving, finances, sleep or relationships. Seek urgent help if you or someone else may be in immediate danger, or if severe distress includes thoughts of self-harm. Feeling anxious or irritable can occur alongside attention problems, but each concern deserves its own assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could ADHD explain the pattern I have described, and what else should be checked? What will the assessment involve? Which supports fit my work and home responsibilities? If medication is considered, what benefits, side effects and follow-up should I expect?

Questions people ask
Can ADHD be recognised in adulthood?
Yes. A clinician can assess longstanding difficulties even when childhood records are incomplete.
Does distractibility prove ADHD?
