Underarm rash treatment at home

The underarm is warm, moist, and exposed to friction. A rash may follow deodorant, shaving, detergent, sweat, or rubbing. Contact Dermatitis can cause redness, itching, burning, or scaling after exposure to an irritant or allergen. Heat Rash and Intertrigo are also possible when heat and moisture stay against the skin. Other patterns can resemble Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies, or a Drug Rash, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat the area completely dry. Pause deodorant, fragranced products, new laundry products, and shaving until the skin settles. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change damp clothing promptly. Avoid scratching, scrubbing, home bleaching mixtures, and sharing towels. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream repeatedly without advice, because the wrong product can mask or aggravate a rash. A cool, clean compress may ease irritation.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, repeatedly returning, draining, developing blisters, or not improving after irritants are removed. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, or fever. A clinician can examine the edge, scale, moisture, and nearby skin and choose treatment suited to the cause.

Ask whether the pattern fits Contact Dermatitis, Intertrigo, or an infection; which products should be stopped; whether a medicine is appropriate; and how long to try it before review.
