What should you know about ultrasound second opinion?

A radiologist or specialist examines the original ultrasound images, the written interpretation, and information such as symptoms, examination findings, and previous scans. They may agree with the first report, explain why a finding appears benign, recommend a focused repeat scan, or suggest another test. Ultrasound can show fluid, soft tissue, blood flow, and movement, but some areas are difficult to assess because of bowel gas, body position, or limited visibility. A review cannot replace missing images or correct an examination that was technically limited.

In cancer care, the review may help determine whether a finding needs monitoring, tissue sampling, or assessment alongside other imaging. It does not by itself diagnose cancer, and a reassuring review does not remove the need for follow-up when a clinician has identified a persistent concern.

Ask the imaging centre how to obtain the ultrasound images in their original format, the report, and relevant earlier scans. Give the reviewing clinician the body area examined, the reason for the scan, symptom changes, prior procedures, and medicines that may affect the assessment. Ask whether the review is remote or in person and when you should expect the written opinion.

Keep the second report with your health records and share it with the clinician coordinating your care. If the opinions differ, ask what specific image feature led to the difference and whether comparison with an earlier scan or a different test would resolve it. Contact your treating team promptly if the scan relates to a new or enlarging lump, worsening pain, unexplained bleeding, jaundice, or a rapidly changing symptom. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, or heavy bleeding.
