What should you know about ultrasound of a breast fibroadenoma?

Fibroadenomas are commonly solid, smooth, and mobile breast lumps. On ultrasound, the radiologist assesses whether the area looks well defined and how it relates to nearby tissue. Ultrasound can also identify a cyst or guide further assessment, but a benign-looking image does not automatically explain every new or changing lump. The result is considered with your age, examination, symptoms, and any previous scans.

During the scan, you lie on your back while gel and a probe are moved over the breast and armpit. Bring earlier imaging if it was performed elsewhere and mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, skin changes, nipple discharge, or a lump that has grown. Depending on the findings, your clinician may recommend observation, a repeat scan, or tissue sampling. A breast biopsy removes a small sample for laboratory examination; removal of the lump is a separate option.

Arrange medical assessment for a new breast lump, especially if it persists or changes. Seek prompt care for skin dimpling, redness with fever, bloody nipple discharge, nipple inversion that is new, or a rapidly enlarging area. A breast lump can have many causes, so these signs call for examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask whether the scan looks consistent with a fibroadenoma, whether tissue sampling is advised, how the lump will be followed, and which changes should bring you back sooner.
