What should you know about an ultrasound Doppler fetal heart rate monitor?

A handheld Doppler may let a clinician listen to the heartbeat during a pregnancy visit. Continuous fetal monitoring uses sensors on the abdomen to trace the fetal heart rate over time, often alongside a sensor for contractions. The trace can show changes linked with movement or contractions. It is interpreted with the stage of pregnancy, labour progress, and the pregnant person's symptoms; one reading does not provide a complete health assessment.

Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and tell the maternity team about pain, bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or a complicated pregnancy. During monitoring, you may need to remain still or change position while the sensor is adjusted. Ask what type of monitor is planned, how long it will be used, and whether you can move around or use a birth position that matters to you.

Contact your maternity service urgently for reduced or absent fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe abdominal pain, regular painful contractions before your planned time, or feeling acutely unwell. Do not wait for a home Doppler result to decide whether to seek care; a heartbeat sound cannot rule out a problem.
