What should you know about ultrasound cholangiocarcinoma?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. In suspected cholangiocarcinoma, it may show widened ducts, a change in bile flow, or an area that needs closer examination. Gas, body shape, and the deep position of some bile ducts can limit the view.

An abnormal scan does not establish the cause. Doctors may combine the images with liver blood tests and other imaging, and may take a tissue sample when appropriate. The location of the suspected tumour, whether it can be removed, and your general health guide the next steps.

Ask what the report describes, where the suspected blockage is, and whether the bile ducts or liver were well visualised. Your team may arrange further imaging, a biopsy, or a specialist review. Treatment can involve tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or symptom-relieving procedures, depending on the findings and test results.

Contact your medical team promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, worsening itching, fever, chills, increasing abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting. Seek emergency care for severe pain, confusion, fainting, or fever with shaking chills. These symptoms can indicate blocked bile flow or infection and need rapid assessment.
