Typhoid fever symptoms and rash

When present, the rash is often described as small, faint spots on the chest or abdomen. It may be difficult to see on some skin tones and may fade quickly. A rash is only one possible feature; typhoid fever commonly involves a sustained fever and can include headache, fatigue, stomach pain or bowel changes.

A rash has many causes, including viral illnesses, allergic reactions and medicine reactions. Its appearance cannot establish typhoid. Tell a clinician about recent travel, food or water exposure, new medicines, fever pattern and bowel symptoms so they can decide whether testing is needed.

Arrange prompt medical advice if a rash occurs with ongoing fever, worsening tiredness or abdominal symptoms, especially after travel. Take a clear photo if the rash changes before your appointment, and list every medicine, supplement and vaccine taken recently.

Avoid sharing towels or preparing food for others until a clinician has considered an infectious cause. Do not start antibiotics from an old prescription; the choice depends on the diagnosis and local resistance patterns.

Seek urgent care if the rash is rapidly spreading, blistering, painful, purple or associated with breathing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, fainting or severe weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed for severe abdominal pain, blood in stool, repeated vomiting or inability to drink.

Ask whether the rash pattern and travel history suggest testing, whether any medicine could be responsible, how to care for your skin, and which changes should trigger urgent review.
