Types of thyroid cancer

Papillary and follicular cancers arise from thyroid cells that normally make thyroid hormones. Medullary thyroid cancer begins in C cells, which make calcitonin, and may be linked to an inherited genetic change. Anaplastic thyroid cancer is a rare, fast-growing form that needs rapid specialist assessment. Some tumours are described as differentiated because their cells retain features of normal thyroid cells; others are less differentiated.

A neck lump, enlarged lymph node, swallowing difficulty, or persistent hoarse voice can have many causes. Ultrasound, needle sampling, blood tests, and scans help identify the type and extent. The pathology report, rather than symptoms alone, determines the diagnosis.

Ask for the exact pathology name and whether genetic testing is relevant, particularly if medullary thyroid cancer is suspected or there is a family history. Treatment may include thyroid removal surgery, radioactive iodine therapy for selected differentiated cancers, targeted therapy, or close monitoring in carefully selected situations. Follow-up checks may include neck examination, blood tests, ultrasound, or other scans. Thyroid hormone replacement may be needed after surgery.

Arrange prompt medical review for a new or enlarging neck lump, a persistent hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, or noisy breathing. Seek emergency help for rapidly worsening neck swelling, severe breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, or sudden weakness. These symptoms do not prove thyroid cancer, but airway or swallowing problems need timely assessment.
