Types of Splints for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Short answer

Splints for rheumatoid arthritis may rest an inflamed joint, support movement or help protect alignment, and the right design depends on the joint and your daily activity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the main types differ

A resting splint holds the wrist, hand or fingers in a comfortable position during sleep or a flare. It can reduce unwanted movement while irritated tissues settle. A working or functional splint is lighter and leaves selected joints free, so you can grip, type or prepare food with support. A thumb or finger splint focuses on one joint when pain, instability or a tendency for the finger to drift affects a specific task.

Some splints are custom-made by an occupational therapist; others are adjustable off-the-shelf supports. A splint should fit without pressure over swollen areas. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly presents with joint pain, swelling and stiffness; a splint supports function but does not treat the underlying inflammation. See the page on Rheumatoid Arthritis for broader condition information.

Using a splint safely

Ask a hand therapist to check the position, wearing schedule and exercises that should continue. Start with a short trial and inspect the skin after removing it. Loosen or remove the splint if you develop numbness, tingling, unusual colour, pressure marks or worsening pain. Keep it clean and dry, and do not use it so tightly that swelling is trapped. Gentle movement of joints not held by the splint can help preserve function when your clinician recommends it. Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be part of a wider treatment plan, but a splint is not a substitute for prescribed treatment.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical review if swelling is increasing, a joint is becoming harder to move, or the splint no longer fits. Seek prompt medical attention for a hot, very red joint with fever, sudden severe pain, new weakness, or a finger or hand that becomes pale, blue or persistently numb. These changes need assessment rather than tighter support.

Questions for your doctor or therapist

Ask which joint needs support, whether you need a resting or functional design, how long to wear it, and which exercises remain appropriate. Also ask how to adjust the splint during a flare and when it should be replaced.

Questions people ask

Can I wear a rheumatoid arthritis splint all day?

Not always. The schedule depends on the joint, the splint design and your therapist’s assessment; prolonged restriction can affect stiffness and function.

What if my hand is swollen?

Have the fit checked. Swelling can make a previously comfortable splint too tight and may require adjustment or a different design.
