Short answer

Types of skin bumps vary from blocked pores and irritated follicles to heat rash, keratosis pilaris, milia, and other conditions; their appearance and symptoms guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Describe them
Note colour, texture, size, location, symptoms, and how quickly they appeared.
Avoid
Squeezing, scratching, and unadvised strong treatments can irritate the skin.
Prompt review
Seek care for rapid spread, pus, fever, bleeding, or a changing bump.

How skin bumps can differ

A bump may be skin-coloured, red, brown, white, or darker than the surrounding skin. It can feel soft, firm, rough, scaly, fluid-filled, or tender. Bumps centred on hairs may reflect folliculitis, while tiny firm white bumps often fit milia. Rough small bumps on the upper arms or thighs can occur with keratosis pilaris. Clusters that appear after heat and sweating may be heat rash. Purple or itchy raised areas can have other causes, including lichen planus.

Notice when the bumps began, whether they are spreading, and whether itching, pain, warmth, discharge, or scaling is present. Location and recent changes such as shaving, a new product, friction, medicines, or sweating can help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A photograph taken in good light can also help show how the area changes over time.

What you can do now

Keep the area clean with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid squeezing, scratching, or scraping the bumps, since this can worsen inflammation and leave marks. Wear loose, breathable clothing where sweat or friction is involved, and pause a newly introduced cosmetic or hair-removal product if the timing fits.

Do not use a strong acid, steroid, antibiotic, or freezing product on an undiagnosed bump without professional advice. A clinician may recommend a targeted treatment after examining the lesion; options can include an antihistamine treatment for selected itchy reactions or cryotherapy for some suitable lesions.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a bump is new and does not settle, keeps returning, changes in size, shape, colour, or texture, bleeds, crusts, or becomes persistently painful or itchy. Seek prompt care if the surrounding skin becomes rapidly red, hot, swollen, or very tender, if pus is present, or if you feel unwell with fever. Get urgent help for bumps accompanied by facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or widespread blistering.

Assessment is also sensible when many bumps appear suddenly, when they involve the eyes or mouth, or when a child or person with reduced immunity is affected. Do not rely on appearance alone to identify a cause; examination may be needed.

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask: What features make this diagnosis more likely? Could a medicine, product, shaving, heat, or friction be contributing? Should I stop or start any skin-care product? What changes should prompt a review, and would testing or treatment be useful if the bumps persist?

Questions people ask

Are all skin bumps caused by acne?

No. Folliculitis, heat rash, keratosis pilaris, milia, irritation, and other skin conditions can also cause bumps, so their pattern and symptoms matter.

Should I pop a skin bump?

Avoid popping or digging at it. This can damage the skin, increase inflammation, and make infection or scarring more likely.

When should a skin bump be checked?

Arrange an assessment for a persistent or changing bump, or seek prompt care for rapid redness and swelling, pus, fever, bleeding, or severe symptoms.
