Types of rheumatoid arthritis: what should you know?

Clinicians may describe rheumatoid arthritis by how many joints are involved, whether symptoms are symmetrical, how active the inflammation is, and whether areas beyond the joints are affected. It commonly involves the small joints of the hands and feet, though other joints can be involved. Finger stiffness, hand swelling, joint pain, and joint swelling are possible presentations of rheumatoid arthritis; these symptoms can also have other causes. Morning stiffness that lasts and recurring swelling are useful details to record.

A rheumatology assessment may include an examination, blood tests, and imaging, interpreted together rather than from one result alone. Treatment aims to control inflammation, protect joint function, and support daily activities. Medicines may include disease-modifying treatment, with anti-inflammatory medication used in selected situations. Gentle mobility, strength work, pacing, and hand protection can support function. Do not stop prescribed treatment suddenly without discussing it with the prescribing clinician.

Seek prompt care for a hot, very swollen joint with fever or feeling acutely unwell, because infection needs urgent consideration.
