Types of liposarcoma

Well-differentiated liposarcoma often contains cells that resemble fat and may grow locally. Dedifferentiated liposarcoma includes an area with more abnormal, faster-growing cells. Myxoid liposarcoma has a distinctive gel-like background and may occur in the limbs. Pleomorphic liposarcoma contains markedly varied abnormal cells. A specialist pathologist uses biopsy findings and imaging to identify the subtype.

The tumour’s size, position, relationship to nearby structures and whether it has spread are also relevant. A lump that grows or remains unexplained needs assessment; its presence alone does not establish liposarcoma.

Ask whether the biopsy was reviewed by a sarcoma-experienced pathologist and whether imaging defines the tumour’s boundaries. Tumour removal surgery is often considered when the tumour can be removed safely. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be discussed before or after surgery, or when disease cannot be managed with surgery alone.

Arrange prompt assessment for a deep lump that enlarges, becomes painful, limits movement or is associated with numbness. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, marked swelling, weakness or loss of function. These symptoms can result from pressure or other conditions, but rapid change warrants medical review.

Which subtype and grade were found? Where is the tumour in relation to nerves, blood vessels and organs? Is surgery intended to remove it completely? Could radiotherapy or chemotherapy help before or after surgery?
