Types of Laminectomy

A cervical, thoracic, or lumbar laminectomy is named for the region treated. A partial laminectomy removes part of the lamina, while a wider decompression removes more bone to create space around the spinal cord or nerve roots. The operation may be performed through a traditional incision or, in selected cases, with a smaller endoscopic approach.

Laminectomy may be considered when narrowing in the spinal canal causes pressure symptoms, including from Spinal Stenosis. If a vertebra is unstable or has shifted, as in Spondylolisthesis, decompression may be paired with fusion or another stabilising procedure. The exact plan depends on symptoms, examination, and imaging.

Before surgery, ask which level is involved, what structure is pressing on the nerves, and whether decompression alone is planned. Discuss medicines, smoking, other illnesses, wound care, walking, lifting, and the rehabilitation schedule. Seek urgent assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly worsening leg or arm weakness, or severe new spinal pain. After surgery, contact the surgical team for fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, severe headache, or a new neurological change.

Ask what type of laminectomy is proposed and why, what symptoms it is expected to address, and whether fusion is needed. Ask about risks specific to your level, recovery milestones, restrictions, and what would trigger a change in the plan.
