Types of Forearm Pain: What to Know

Short answer
Forearm pain may come from muscle strain, tendon irritation, nerve pressure, joint problems, or an injury, and its pattern helps guide assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common patterns of forearm pain
Pain after lifting, gripping, or repeated wrist movement often points toward an irritated muscle or tendon. Pain along the inner elbow and forearm can occur with [Golfer's Elbow](/conditions/golfers-elbow/), while pain on the outer elbow with gripping or wrist extension can occur with [Tennis Elbow](/conditions/tennis-elbow/). These conditions present with forearm discomfort, but forearm pain itself does not identify one diagnosis.
A burning or electric feeling, pins and needles, or weakness may suggest nerve irritation. Sudden pain after a fall, a visible deformity, marked swelling, or bruising raises concern for an injury. Pain that travels from the neck or shoulder can have a different source from pain focused in the forearm.
What you can do
Reduce the movement that reliably triggers pain without keeping the arm completely still. Use gentle range-of-motion exercises if they are comfortable, and consider a cool pack wrapped in cloth for a short period after a recent strain. Avoid repeatedly testing the painful grip. A clinician or physiotherapist can check strength, sensation, neck and elbow movement, and the way the wrist is being used. See the overview of [Forearm Pain](/symptoms/forearm-pain/) for related symptoms to track.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment after a significant injury, especially with deformity, severe swelling, inability to move the wrist or fingers, or a hand that is cold, pale, or blue. Arrange prompt care for new weakness, persistent numbness, spreading redness, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Recurrent pain during work or sport also merits review so the provoking load and technique can be addressed.
Questions for your doctor
Tell your clinician what activity started the pain, where it is strongest, and whether it is aching, sharp, burning, or tingling. Ask whether the elbow, wrist, neck, or a nerve needs examination, which activities to modify, and when strengthening or therapy should begin.

Questions people ask
Does forearm pain always come from the forearm?
No. Pain can be referred from the elbow, wrist, shoulder, or neck, so the whole area may need checking.
Can repetitive gripping cause forearm pain?
Yes. Repeated gripping or wrist movement can overload tendons and muscles, particularly when rest and recovery are limited.
