Types of food poisoning bacteria

Short answer
Types of food poisoning bacteria cause illness through gut infection or toxins, and their symptoms cannot be identified reliably by symptoms alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- A stool sample may be useful in selected cases
How bacterial causes differ
Some bacteria multiply after entering the digestive tract; others leave toxins in food or produce them in the bowel. Contamination may be associated with undercooked animal products, unwashed produce, unsafe water, or poor temperature control, but the source is not always obvious. Abdominal Pain, Diarrhoea, Nausea, Vomiting and Fever may occur in different combinations.
The onset, severity and duration can provide clues, yet they do not confirm a specific bacterium. A stool sample may be considered when symptoms are severe, prolonged, bloody, linked to an outbreak, or occurring in someone at higher risk. Avoid preparing food for others while you have diarrhoea or vomiting.
Supportive care and prevention
Replace fluid and salts with frequent sips of water or Oral Rehydration Therapy. Wash hands with soap, separate raw and ready-to-eat foods, cook foods thoroughly, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not take antibiotics without medical advice: treatment depends on the organism, severity and the person’s health. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy.
Red flags
Seek urgent care for bloody diarrhoea, severe Abdominal Pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, signs of dehydration or a significant Fever. Get medical advice early for young children, older adults, pregnancy or reduced immunity. Emergency help is needed if the person is difficult to wake or cannot keep any fluid down.
Questions to ask
Would a stool test change treatment? Should I use oral rehydration solution? When can I return to work or prepare food, and which warning signs should prompt reassessment?

Questions people ask
Can symptoms identify the exact bacterium?
No. Different bacteria can cause overlapping symptoms, so timing and clinical context are needed and testing may be required.
Are antibiotics always needed?
No. Some illnesses improve with fluid replacement, while antibiotics are reserved for selected situations decided by a clinician.
