Types of Excision in Surgery

Short answer
Types of excision in surgery differ by the tissue removed, the route used to reach it and whether nearby structures also need treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Core action
- Removal of selected tissue

- May be laparoscopic or open
- Purpose
- Diagnosis, treatment or both
What excision can involve
A surgeon may remove a small, defined area or carefully separate disease from surrounding healthy tissue. In endometriosis surgery, excision means cutting out visible deposits rather than simply burning their surface. The operation may be performed through small abdominal openings with a camera, or through a larger incision when access or disease extent requires it.
The intended result may be diagnosis, symptom relief, removal of a suspicious area, or treatment of a condition. The plan can change if the surgeon finds deeper disease or tissue close to the bowel, bladder, ureters or reproductive organs. Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is one example of targeted removal.
Preparing for a discussion
Ask what the surgeon expects to remove, how the tissue will be examined and whether the procedure is diagnostic, therapeutic or both. Confirm the planned route, anaesthesia, likely recovery needs and what happens if disease is more extensive than expected. A diagnostic laparoscopy may help clarify the findings before a definitive treatment plan.
Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous operations and symptoms such as pelvic pain or pain during sex. Written instructions about eating, medicines and returning to activity should guide your preparation.
When to seek care
Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, fever, increasing redness or swelling, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, faintness, breathing difficulty or trouble passing urine. After pelvic surgery, new severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen or inability to keep fluids down needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are rapidly worsening.
Questions for your doctor
Which tissue will you remove, and will it be sent for examination? What route and instruments are planned? Could the operation involve organs nearby? How will pain, activity and follow-up be managed?

Questions people ask
Is excision the same as ablation?
No. Excision cuts out tissue, while ablation destroys or treats tissue at its surface or with energy.
Can excision be changed during surgery?
Yes. Findings during the operation may lead the team to adjust the planned extent or discuss another procedure.
