Types of cellulite: what the dimpling can mean

Short answer
Cellulite appears in several patterns, and its texture reflects how fat, connective bands, and skin firmness interact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the patterns mean
Soft cellulite tends to look smooth when you are lying down and more dimpled when standing. It may move with the skin and is often described as loose or yielding. Hard or compact cellulite can feel firmer, with deeper dimples that remain visible in different positions. Oedematous cellulite has a puffier appearance and may occur alongside a feeling of heaviness. These descriptions can overlap; they are visual patterns rather than separate diagnoses. Cellulite is common and is not the same as obesity, although changes in body size can alter how it looks.
What you can do
A clinician can assess whether lax skin, local fat, fluid retention, or tethering bands are contributing. Treatment choices depend on that assessment. Skin-tightening approaches such as Radiofrequency Skin Tightening or RF Microneedling may be considered when reduced firmness is prominent. Subcision targets selected fibrous bands beneath a dimple, while Carboxytherapy is another procedure a clinician may discuss. Results and aftercare vary, and several sessions may be suggested. Regular movement and stable routines can support skin and muscle health, but creams cannot reliably change deeper connective bands.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if a new area is painful, hot, red, rapidly swollen, or firm in a way that differs from your usual skin texture. One-sided swelling, sudden change, or swelling with breathlessness needs prompt attention. Seek advice before an aesthetic procedure if you are pregnant, have a skin infection, or take medicines that affect bleeding, because the safest plan depends on your history.
Questions for your doctor
Which pattern is most visible in my skin, and is laxity or tethering the main contributor? Which option matches my goal, what recovery should I plan for, and how will you monitor irritation or uneven texture?

Questions people ask
Is cellulite a medical disease?
Cellulite is usually a cosmetic skin texture pattern, not a dangerous disease.
Can exercise remove cellulite?
Movement may support muscle tone and circulation, but it does not release every connective band causing dimpling.
