Twin Stim TENS unit: what to know

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Adhesive pads sit on intact skin near, rather than directly over, the painful area. The device sends controlled pulses that may change how pain signals are processed and may encourage a more comfortable movement experience. Relief is variable and often temporary; TENS does not repair a torn structure, heal a fracture or identify the cause of pain.

Read the device instructions and begin with a low, comfortable intensity while seated. Check the skin before and after use, keep pads clean, and stop if there is burning, rash, dizziness or worsening pain. Do not place electrodes over broken or infected skin, the front of the neck, the head or across the chest. Ask a clinician before use if you have an implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, a seizure disorder or are pregnant.

Stop using TENS and seek advice for a skin reaction that persists, new weakness, loss of sensation or a marked change in pain. Urgent assessment is appropriate for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or sudden neurological symptoms. Have persistent pain assessed so the underlying problem is not masked by temporary relief.

Ask where pads should sit for your pain, which programme and intensity are suitable, and whether TENS fits with your medicines, diagnosis or implanted devices. Clarify how it should complement exercise or physiotherapy.
