What should you know about turmeric and kidney stones?

Kidney stones form from substances that crystallise in urine. Turmeric used as a cooking spice is different from capsules or extracts, which can provide a much more concentrated amount. Supplements may interact with medicines or be unsuitable when you have kidney, liver, bleeding or digestive problems. They should not replace assessment for a suspected stone. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated, so maintaining your usual fluid intake may help reduce avoidable strain, unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids.

If you have new flank or abdominal pain, painful urination, or difficulty passing urine, arrange a GP consultation. A clinician can assess the pattern of pain, urine symptoms and your medicines, then decide whether tests such as an abdominal ultrasound are appropriate. Do not start a high-dose turmeric product to dissolve a stone. Keep the product packaging or ingredient list available, especially if you take blood-thinning medicine or have another long-term condition.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, blood in the urine, faintness, or inability to pass urine. These features can signal blockage, infection or dehydration and need prompt assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a kidney stone, whether turmeric could interact with your medicines, how much fluid is appropriate for you, and whether urine testing or imaging is needed.
